Members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Awka branch, have urged a united front involving the media, government, private organisations, and social clubs to combat cancer by ensuring access to early screening and tests for indigent residents in Awka and beyond.
The call was made during a free medical test/work for health against cancer exercise tagged “NBA Awka monthly fitness exercise, organised by the Association on Saturday, October 17th, 2026 for members.
The outreach, held on the NBA’s premises, covered blood pressure and blood sugar test for members
Addressing press at the event, the NBA Chairman, Awka branch, Barrister Nnamdi Raphael Anagor, said early screening of cancer is key to determining the appropriate preventive and curative treatment.

According to Anagor, we decided to embark on this health sensitization walk, even though, we are not medical professionals to enducate the public, especially people above 40-years on the danger of cancer and to contribute our quarter for a better and healthy Awka, Anambra State and Nigeria as a whole.
“The Walk exercise is currently taking place across NBA’s branches nationwide.
“NBA is doing this to let those above 40-years to make cancer checks a priority.
“Opportunities like this are created when social clubs including NBA mobilise their members and give them access to offer screening services.
“If you don’t know what’s wrong with you, you won’t get access to the best care. The earlier you detect a problem, the easier it is to nip it in the bud before it becomes a major issue.
“We cannot expect the government to do everything alone; that’s why the Nigerian Bar Association decided to organise this health walk, Anagor noted.
On her part, the Awka branch facilitator, NBA Women Forum, lady Barr. Obianuju Nwakpadolu, announced that the health walk will be concluded with a free breast and cervical cancer check-ups for female members of the association on Saturday, October 24th, 2026.
The health walk commenced at the Ozo Amanka Okafor Bar Centre premises by CPS Police Divisional Headquarters and terminated at the popular Fun City Awka.
