The Special Adviser to governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo of Anambra State, on Youth Reformation, Dr Nelson Obinna Omenugha, has expressed serious concern over rising cases of kidney problems and sudden deaths among young people in the society.
He attributed the causes to drug misuse, fake medicines and unsafe consumable products.
Omenugha concerned was contained in a press release tagged “ANAMBRA YOUTHS: SAY NO TO SUBSTANCE ABUSE, FAKE DRUGS AND DANGEROUS LIFESTYLES” he personally signed and made available to Journalists in Awka on Wednesday, October 14th, 2026.
According to him, “The attention of youths across Anambra State is drawn to the dangers of substance abuse, counterfeit medicines, adulterated consumables and unsafe lifestyle choices that threaten their health, well-being and future.
“Reports of serious illnesses, kidney problems and sudden deaths among young people are deeply concerning. Although these conditions may have different causes, drug misuse, fake medicines and unsafe consumable products can expose people to severe health complications and even death.
“Your health is your future, and your future is Anambra’s future. No temporary pleasure, peer pressure or quick financial gain is worth sacrificing your life, dreams and contribution to society.
“We therefore urge young people to embrace healthy lifestyles, avoid hard drugs and the misuse of prescription medicines, purchase medicines only from authorised and reputable sources, and verify the safety of food, drinks, supplements and other consumables. Never take unidentified substances or medicines recommended by unqualified persons. Always seek guidance from qualified health professionals.
“We strongly condemn those who sell or distribute hard drugs, counterfeit medicines and adulterated consumable products for selfish financial gain. Profiting from substances that endanger lives is an attack on our youths, our families and the future of Anambra State. No amount of money is worth a human life.
“We call on youths, parents, community leaders, youth organisations and concerned citizens to remain vigilant and report suspected drug networks, counterfeit medicines and unlawful sales to the appropriate authorities, including the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other relevant law enforcement agencies.
“My office at the Light House (New Government House), Awka, is also open to receive and escalate such reports.
“Reports should be made responsibly, with relevant details such as product names, packaging and locations. Avoid consuming or distributing suspected products, and do not confront suspected offenders in ways that could endanger your safety.
“Protecting our young people is a collective responsibility. Together, we must promote healthy choices, uphold the value of life, strengthen community vigilance and build a generation defined by discipline, productivity and positive values.
“Anambra cannot afford to lose its future to substance abuse, fake drugs and dangerous lifestyle choices. Let us protect our lives, defend our communities and secure a healthier future for our state, the SA advocated further.
