The Governor of Anambra State and Visitor to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has approved the full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government/Academic Staff Union of Universities (FG/ASUU) Agreement for staff of the University.
According Christian Aburime, the governor’s Chief Press, who disclosed this in a statement in Awka, the approval, which is for full implementation, will take effect from January in the 2027 fiscal year.
He said the approval is in line with the Governor’s commitment to workers’ welfare in the state. The cheering news was formally conveyed to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, FNIPR, by the Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Peter Onwualu, on Thursday, 8th October, 2026.
Receiving the communication, the Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the University Management, Senate, Staff and Students, expressed profound gratitude to Mr. Governor, describing him as a dependable leader whose word is his bond, following his earlier assurances on the matter.
In the same vein, she appreciated the leadership and members of the labour unions in the University for their understanding and for adopting a responsible approach in their engagement with the University Management and Council, which has ultimately led to an amicable and productive outcome without resorting to the usual industrial action that destabilizes the University community.
She further assured the Anambra State Government that the University community will reciprocate this landmark gesture by redoubling its efforts towards placing Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University on the global map of excellence.
