The Honourable Minister of Work, Engr Dave Umahi, has reafirmed the Federal Government’s commitment towards safety of Nigerians across highways in the country.
Umahi stated this while inspecting a damaged portion of the inter-change section of the Second Niger Bridge at Obosi-Onitsha-Owerri highway, Anambra State.
The Minister was at the spot on Thursday, to inspect the damage portion that is currently undergoing repaire, reportedly cause by erosion ravaging the area
He revealed that the base had been eaten into by erosion, endangering motorists who drive on the bridge, oblivious of the hollow underneath.
Earlier, the Minister, ordered the installation of closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras on the First Niger Bridge as a way to stop the theft of bolts, iron joints and other components of the bridge.
According to him, the CCTV installation is to prevent vandals and other criminal elements from removing bolts, expansion joints and iron bars holding together the bridge.
“The entire bridge will be wired with cameras to ensure that these vandals are caught and presecuted.
“This road is for the good of all of us, especially, we the Igbo, so we should endeavor to protect it and not to allow those behind the progress of the region to destroy it.
“The present administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s led-Federal government is fully committed towards the safety of every Nigerian across the Nation’s highways.
Umahi commended the social media for their continue support via prompt reportage on Nigeria roads.
It was gathered that the Minister has been on the spot-assessment tour on failed roads across the South South and South east geo-political zones in the past four days.
