The debate over the newly unveiled iconic sculpture of Professor Chinua Achebe at the popular Ugwu Nwasike has, expectedly, taken over sections of the social media. The dominant question has been whether the sculpture bears a perfect resemblance to the global literary icon. But perhaps the more important question is this: And what if it really doesn’t? Since when did our appreciation of a noble tribute become entirely dependent on photographic resemblance? Across the world, sculptures are artistic interpretations, not photocopies in stone or bronze. Every sculptor brings a unique perspective, influenced by artistic philosophy, symbolism, style and technique. Two artists can sculpt the same individual and produce remarkably different results without either being wrong.
Criticism of sculpture, therefore, ought to be grounded in the principles of art, craftsmanship, proportion, symbolism and creative interpretation, not merely in emotional reactions or sentimental comparisons with familiar photographs. Art has always invited diverse interpretations, and no serious evaluation should ignore that reality. It’s perfectly legitimate to debate artistic merit, but reducing every conversation to “it doesn’t look exactly like him” reflects a limited understanding of what sculpture seeks to achieve.
It’s equally important to put the facts in proper context. The Achebe sculpture at Ugwu Nwasike is not a project commissioned by the Anambra State Government. It’s a project of the Ogidi Town Union, conceived and executed by the community in honour of one of its greatest sons. Governor Charles Soludo merely honoured the invitation to unveil it, lending the dignity of his office to a community initiative celebrating an icon whose literary legacy belongs to Nigeria and the world. It’s, therefore, unfair to politicize what is fundamentally a cultural and communal tribute.
Beyond that, one wonders whether this should truly be the issue consuming public attention at a time when the nation grapples with weightier political, economic and security challenges. There are far more pressing conversations demanding our collective energy than endless arguments over whether a sculpture perfectly mirrors the facial features of the man it honours. A society that loses sight of priorities risks mistaking distractions for substance.
Ultimately, the enduring value of the monument lies not merely in facial resemblance but in the intention behind it: preserving the memory of Professor Albert Chinụalụmọgụ Achebe, inspiring younger generations and reminding visitors that greatness once walked from our soil. Good thoughts deserve encouragement, not needless political point-scoring. We may debate artistic execution, but we should never allow that debate to overshadow the noble idea of immortalizing one of Africa’s greatest literary genius. Sometimes, appreciating the spirit behind a gesture is every bit as important as scrutinizing its form.
