A routine attempt to recover a lost mobile phone ended in tragedy in Kano State after a 45-year-old man, Yusuf Usman, died inside a disused well that had been converted into a refuse pit.
The incident occurred on Wednesday in Kwa Town, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area, throwing residents into mourning.
According to the Kano State Fire Service, Usman had descended into the well in a bid to retrieve a mobile phone that accidentally fell into it.
However, he became trapped in the confined space and could not find his way back to safety.
Spokesman of the Fire Service, Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, said the agency received a distress call from one of its personnel, Kabiru Tata, prompting the immediate deployment of firefighters from the state headquarters.
On arrival, rescue operatives successfully brought the victim out of the well, but he was already unconscious.
He was later confirmed dead.
Preliminary investigations indicated that oxygen depletion and excessive heat within the enclosed space may have caused his death.
The remains of the deceased were handed over to the Ward Head of Kwa Town, Alhaji Muktar, for burial.
Reacting to the incident, the Director of the Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, urged residents to cover open wells and properly seal abandoned ones to prevent similar fatalities.
