The Young Progressives Party (YPP) governorship candidate, Sir Paul Chukwuma,in collaboration with
a youth-led coalition under the banner of Make Anambra Great Again (MAGA), staged a peaceful protest over the weekend calling for improved security and greater accountability from local security agencies in Anambra State.
The demonstration, which commenced at Aroma Junction and concluded at the Anambra State Police Command in Amawbia, drew a notable turnout of residents concerned about recent security challenges in the state. The protest was sparked by a series of violent incidents, including an alleged assault on a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Jennifer Elohor, reportedly by operatives of Agunechemba, a state-backed community security outfit.
Addressing the crowd, Chukwuma emphasized the growing concern among citizens over public safety and the role of state-backed security operatives. “We are here to express our concern about the current state of security in Anambra. Our people deserve protection, not fear,” he said. He urged the government and security agencies to restore public confidence and ensure the rule of law is upheld.
Chukwuma also raised concerns about allegations of misconduct by some members of the Agunechemba outfit, including reports of unauthorized use of firearms and intimidation of civilians. He called for a comprehensive review of the group’s operations to ensure alignment with constitutional standards and human rights principles.
While acknowledging that the protest carried political undertones, Chukwuma clarified that the movement transcends partisanship. “This is about the safety and dignity of every citizen in Anambra, not just political aspirations. We want a state where every resident feels protected and heard,” he stated.
Responding to the protest, Deputy Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Ezekiel commended the peaceful nature of the demonstration and assured the public that the police were actively investigating the incident involving the corps member. He confirmed that suspects had been apprehended and would face due legal processes.
“We take these issues seriously. The Anambra State Police Command is committed to upholding justice and ensuring accountability,” Ezekiel said. He noted that Agunechemba was established to support police efforts in community policing, but acknowledged that recent complaints warranted closer scrutiny.
Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga also addressed the gathering, affirming the command’s ongoing efforts to improve collaboration between law enforcement and community-based security groups. “We are organizing training programs for Agunechemba members focused on human rights, ethics, and proper engagement with the public. Our goal remains a secure and peaceful Anambra for all,” Ikenga said.
The police further reiterated their willingness to engage community stakeholders in meaningful dialogue to address underlying issues and foster a safer environment for all residents.
