The Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS), has commence it enforcement actions against non-compliant taxpayers in the state.
The Executive Chairman of AIRS, Mr Ikeazor Okonkwo, FCA, FCTI, disclosed this while briefing Journalists at the AIRS headquarters in Awka on Tuesday, September 22nd, 2026.
Okonkwo said the efforcement exercise is to inform those who have failed to regulate their taxes in accordance with the Anambra tax laws.
According to him, what we are about to do is a kind of sensitizing the taxepayers on the importance of regulating their taxes at when due and not in a violent manner.
The enforcement will be made digitally and not by physical dragging.
Before the commencement of this enforcement, we have notifies all taxable persons, individuals, businesses, corporate organisations and other taxpayers in Anambra State that the Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration and Tax Regularisation Scheme (VAIDS) ended on 5 September 2026.
The notification was made via radio jingles, Churches and Markets public address system.
“During the VAIDS period, taxpayers were given an opportunity to voluntarily regularise their outstanding tax obligations and benefit from applicable concessions.
“With the expiration of the Scheme, the window for voluntary tax regularisation has closed.
“AIRS has accordingly commenced full statutory compliance monitoring and enforcement actions against non-compliant taxpayers in accordance with applicable tax laws and the enforcement actions will apply to taxpayers who; Failed to regularise their outstanding tax liabilities under VAIDS, Received Best of Judgment (BOJ) assessments and failed to object to or settle such assessments within the prescribed period, or Underpaid, under-remitted or otherwise failed to discharge their statutory tax obligations.
“The non-compliant taxpayers may be subject to enforcement measures prescribed by law, including; issuance and service of final statutory demand notices and sealing, where applicable;
Recovery of outstanding tax liabilities through lawful enforcement measures; and Prosecution and commencement of court proceedings in respect of established tax offences.
What we’re trying to do is to make the public aware that if they received any assessments, demand notices and best of judgement that means it is the last window for them to regularize.
“We’re also setting up an alternative dispute resolution process so that if there is any genuine objections that the taxpayers have, they can come up and do it.
“But one thing that is clear is that AIRS under the leadership is going through a process where we will lawfully go after all the people who have not regularized their tax affairs.
Those who are already compliant, they should keep it up.
The Anambra State Internal Revenue Service under watch remains committed to a fair, transparent, technology-driven and accountable tax administration system that supports sustainable development and the economic growth of Anambra State.
“As it stands now the agency under my operational control, we are targeting 1 million taxpayers in addition to the already existing 500,000 taxpayers in the state.
So, that’s the message for today’s press conversation, the Chairman stated.
