Former National Publicity Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party, Chief Olisa Metuh, on Thursday, November 27, 2025, began a series of philanthropic activities in Nnewi, Anambra State, to mark his 60th birthday.
The former PDP spokesman said it was an anniversary he chose to celebrate by giving hope to the less privileged in the society.
He began the celebrations by visiting the Old Father’s Home in Ndigwu Village, Otollo, Nnewi before proceeding to the palace of the traditional ruler of Nnewi, Igwe Kenneth Orizu III, where he received royal blessings and formally expressed his commitment to using his milestone birthday to uplift the the needy in the society.
From the palace, the entourage moved to several other places, including the Nnewi Correctional Centre, where he donated food items, drinks, toileteries and other essential items consumables to support the welfare and the upkeep of the inmates.
He assured the management that his support would be continuous and extended beyond material items while announcing a scholarship scheme for about five inmates of of the correctional centre up to the university level.
While counselling the inmates, Metuh recalled that he had been an inmate of a correctional centre before and understands how it feels to be behind bars, but was quick to admonish the inmates that this is not the end of the world.
He said, “I have come here to give you hope and that is the greatest gift we bring today. And for those of you that are minor offenders I would expedite action in securing your bail.
“I have a scholarship scheme that would train five of the inmates of this correctional centre up to the university level and I also know that you have problems related to access to good drinking water and that is why I will be sinking a water borehole here in Nnewi Correctional Centre and also construct a skill acquisition centre, once approved by the authorities, to help reintegrate you back into the society with employable skills.
“I urge you not to lose hope, a person has to be in full body and soul to overcome the challenges of being behind bars. Though you are here , let your body be here and not your soul and your soul shall be where you want it to be when you come out of here.
“Myself have been here before and today I am visiting to celebrate my 60th birthday with you. Be well-behaved. You can become a politician tomorrow or rise to high positions in society. Nothing can stop you from becoming what you want, with hardwork and determination.”
Speaking to journalists in an interview at his residence, Metuh reflected on his journey, saying the highpoint for him were the mercies of God and the fact that he was able to find protection, peace and the love of God.
“My message for people is to remain calm, do not go desperately in search of wealth, possession, whatever will be will be. Money cannot answer all problems, it could only take care of one’s needs, it is not the end, the end in itself is peace, joy, love and the blessings of God.
“The philanthropic gestures I carried out today absolutely do not have any political undertone, I have no intention to vie for any political office, at least not in Nnewi, I will not sponsor, I will not support any individual to run for any political office.
“The gesture was purely benevolent, charitable, work and it is not something that I have been doing here, I have been doing a lot which many people do not know. I have a lot of people that I have given scholarship up to the university level.
“The reason I have come down here to do it is because of the loss of my younger brother, late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, when he was here, nobody was hungry, nobody went to bed without eating. When he was here, my community never lacked. That is why I have come home to ensure that our people do not cry so much about the loss of Ifeanyi Ubah.”
